Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with Andrew Wolfe, a local skateboarder. He stopped by Inner Journeys to drop off a petition to build a “Skate Park” for the Vidalia and Toombs County youth for skateboarding.
“Skating is gaining attention as a serious sport, much like tennis, basketball, soccer, softball and any number of other sports offered by Rec Departments all over the US”, Wolfe shares enthusiastically. “A skate park would provide a large population of kids with a place to go – a safe environment that is monitored by adults, where they can skate and stay out of trouble”, he continues.
I’ve often envied skateboarders as they whizzed along the sidewalks around town. It just looks like such a free spirited means of transportation, reminiscent of childhood and right up there with roller skates and bicycles. I’m in favor of anything that provides our youth with activities that keep them entertained and out of trouble, and I’m in favor of putting in some type of recreational arena for skateboarders.
